Stan episode is right up there with your best. Loved it.

Really got me thinking about how advertising works with respect to audiences outside a brand’s cultural bubble. Not to mention all the race/gender/identity politics inherent in our area that it’s all to easy to take for granted as a straight middle aged whitey. Defo good food for thought.

Big ups πŸ‘ŠπŸ‘ŠπŸ‘Š

Enjoyed this one Matt. I interviewed Stan back in the day for Cooler Magazine (RIP) and it was super interesting to hear him reflect back on that time & how he views the industry now. Also remember how awesome Raewyn Reid was... (And I’m a big fan of Type 2 ✌️)

7min intro and a housekeeping corner. This is what I'm here for.

Really great listen - loved the part when he was saying people expected him to be white as he had a β€œwhite sounding name”. It’s so true!!! Keeping my married name β€˜Curtis’ despite being divorced was easier in many ways than migrating back to my Mauritian maiden name β€˜Puttay’

Great to listen to his story and his pretty incredible impact!!!

Loved the episode, but as a white middle aged man I do not know how to overcome the problems that Stan has experienced. The basement incident was unforgivable and the team manager should have given up or shared their room.

Maybe if the snowdomes can help in some way, by maybe doing a diversity evening. Like I said, I’m pretty much out of touch on this subject.

I will say that as a skater of sorts, I have skated with many folk from many backgrounds and never once judged them by the colour of their skin. Hopefully snowsports can take a leaf out of skating’s book.

Super great listen as always!! I found this episode to be especially touching, because as a person of color in a white dominated field (architecture and landscape architecture) K feel like I’ve been dealing with a pretty good amount of imposter syndrome lately, and hearing the discourse between you and Stan, kind of motivated me to ignore that, so I appreciate that!

So many lovely observations from Stan about the different pathways we take come to access a sports and their cultures, and how paths impact our relationship to both. I also loved his emphasis on the always-in-action requirement for cultural change. We won’t always get it right, but it shouldn’t be something we contribute to when it beat suits us.

Matt, it’s also great listening to how you, as the host, are working through these issues and stories as you listen. It’s a process for everyone to see the different ways we're implicated, huh. It’s cool hearing you navigate this.
