If you want to trial a paid subscription, there’s a really simple way: just forward this to five friends using the button below, and if they sign up free or paid, you’ll get three months paid sub free. Easy.

1. Paid subscribers! I’ll be sitting down with Lauren MacCallum and Jon Weaver to record the latest episode of Roundtable this coming weekend.

As you’ll know if you listened to the first instalment, Roundtable is a paid subscriber only - well - roundtable discussion about the action sports and other related endeavours topics du jour.

I’d love to know what you’d like to hear us discuss, so let me know in the comments below:

2. I probably wouldn’t usually post this, but it’s been great to see all friend-of-the-show Mikey Corker’s hard work pay off these last two years. Mikey was one of the filmers on The Kangs trip, and if you listened to our spring 2022 conversation, you’ll know this and his other successful projects are the result of decades plugging away and ‘sitting in the chair’, as last week’s guest Thomas Campbell would put it.

3. John Rattray is the latest person to be profiled for The Ben Raemers Foundations’s excellent SMiLE series. Watch it above, and listen to my November 2019 episode with John, in which we explored similar themes, here.

4. Yes, I know I posted the first part of this the other week, but I’m posting the second part of Yuval Noah Hariri’s Leading interview because he’s so interesting and thought-provoking on the topic of AI. Listen above.

5. I’m proud of the small part I played in establishing Opening Up The Outdoors, so I’m really glad to see that the organisation are now taking applications for a new Changemaker programme. Previous recipients of the award include friends-of-the-show Wave Wahines and All The Elements. If you run a grassroots programme that aims to increase diversity in the outdoors, it’s a brilliant way of getting funding and mentoring. Find out more and apply here.

Looking Sideways is proudly reader and listener supported. Thanks to all my paid subscribers, who help keep the podcast and newsletter free for everybody, including new paid subscriber Joel over in Sweden, who took the plunge this week. 6. I went to London Calling last week and it was great, so I thought I’d share details of another UK skate get-together - Mon’s Jam, an SS20 reunion taking place in September. Details here.

7. Hannah Bailey on Pack Heavy Chase Light!

8. ‘Did anybody ever have their mind changed by a Marina Hyde article?’ is my usual line when it comes to the left’s favourite acidulous columnist, but this piece on the depressing Mason Greenwood saga is worth a read.

9. Mike Hatchett teams up with TGR and takes it back to the annual-shred-flick-old-school with this forthcoming release. Friend-of-the-show John Rodosky is involved, which is about all I need to know. Watch the trailer above.

10. Finally, my Tour de Test Valley x Vans Europe in association with CALM event at the Vans store in London on Thursday September 7th is coming up fast!

I’ll be conducting a live chat with Schoph, Helena Long and Andrew Cotton on the topic of mental health, which I’ll be recording and releasing as a future episode of the podcast.

Spaces are limited but I’ve snagged a couple of freebie exclusively for paid subscribers. If you want one, hit me up - first come, first served.

Ride on Nelly. We miss you brother X

Got a story or link you think might work for my weekly Ten Things, which goes out to thousands of readers each week? Let me know!

Hey Matt! With the 3 of you having a background in snowboarding/action sports I’d be super interested to hear your thoughts on finding a community when moving to a new place - having recently left Aviemore/the Cairngorms (which Lauren especially will know has a pretty tight knit outdoor network) to move to the city I’ve somewhat struggled with my search for a similar group of people, be that through skating or surfing. As snow sports & the outdoors were also the main focus for my creative work there is an element of finding an identity as well.

What advice do you have for navigating through this and making those connections?

Cheers 🤙🏼

I would love you 3 to discuss future of splitboarding, and maybe future of «ski» resorts, particularly in Europe. Do you believe in this trend that we see happening in the US of «backcountry» resorts (RIP Bluebird resort, but others are taking the lead) coming to the Alps?
